Description
Description:The history of Sutton Upon Derwent Village Hall starts with one man - That man is the remarkable Michael Hallet Pimm.
Mr Pimm was appointed rector in 1921 and his most lasting monument has got to be the village hall.
His boundless energy, his magnetic personality and his ability to obtain the best from everyone he came in contact with enabled bulding work to start on the Village Hall in 1929.
Much of the work was done by Rev. Pimm himself, aided by voluntary labour from local bricklayers, joiners and other craftsmen. Local landowners provided materials and labour and the village Hall was completed in 1931 at a total cost of £1,600.
In 1995 a major extension was added to the Hall part of which is a splendid meeting room named “The Pimm Room”.
Today the Hall continues to be run by a Council of management drawn from users of the Hall and community groups working to the constitution drawn by the Rev. Pimm in 1931 and serves the needs of local residents and people in both the York and Pocklington areas.
The Hall has won several “Best Village Hall Awards” over the last twenty years. More recently it was one of the first Halls in the East Riding to be awarded the “Hallmark 1” quality standard.
The Council of management is actively involved in the East Riding Network for Village Halls.
